I've been there twice and plan to go again tomorrow.
The biggest nightmare of this sale is the emptying of my wallet!

No trolleys should be allowed for the sale! My feet had been trampled and crushed by high heels and trolley wheels all day.
The sale was amazingly good; pretty much on the same par as the Penguin Sale. But I have to admit, they could have used a bigger venue for the book sale, for the customer's convenience. It was way too small to house such a large number of books!

Damage done: an approximate 20 books. All of them pretty new releases; most are still available in bookstores. Tons of Stephen King there. Recommend this sale to all avid readers.

hi elizabeth. i went there too this morning. but unlike you, i arrived circa 9.30am, the parking lot was still half empty, and at 10am when the sale opened i walk into the place with a breeze. the crowd build-up was very quick, by the time i want to pay for my 28 books, it took me 30mins of queuing. exited amcorp mall about 12.30pm, and saw the traffic coming in was like hell.

as for your recommendation to bring trolley baskets, it'd be better to bring something like the Ikea yellow (or blue) bag that you can sling over your shoulders. again, the crowd would be huge, then you'd be stuck with a trolley basket without the space to pull it around.

another - no babies please!! and keep the strollers and prams at home.

it pays to come early to this kind of places. if you arrive there about 11am, better go back and come again the next day. Early.

if you think this was crazy, then try going going to hasbro or mattel toy warehouse sale! that was the first time i saw adults fighting over toys. literally fighting!

I think whether we think a book is good or not is subjective, and it truly depends on a person's taste. My taste doesn't run towards Ripples, unfortunately.

Yes, I do know that her book has been shortlisted. I'm just saying that currently, the Malaysian literati seem to recognise a narrow range of writing and story types as 'good'. I read all the 'award-winning' stories and I get frustrated as I don't discover anything new or exciting. I suppose I share Myers' view on literature.

By the way, my work has been published already ;)

But never mind. Why don't we just talk rationally instead of throwing insults at each other, right?

"I also picked up Shih-Li Kow’s Ripples, and found that although the short stories were beautifully crafted they left me empty and unsatisfied. We’re told that these are the best of the best, but why am I not convinced?"

Now that Shih-Li's Ripples is SHORTLISTED for Frank O' Connors prize, it shows that you really don't recognize a good book even when it smacks you on your face. Hahaha!

Keep on dreaming of getting your work published, but do be such a sour grape!

A lot of American MFA programs are very well-funded. Most students in the top MFA programs pay nothing to attend. However, they are two years long, and very competitive (for example, Cornell University had 800 applications for 4 spots).

Michelle Richmond is certainly a writer I'd look out for and thank you for recommending the website. It looks like an awesome website!!

I think Alice Sebold is another writer I really admire for her lovely writing and ability to write an engaging and fascinating story with great characters and a good plot ... not to mention how she's successfully blended genres.
